The “Wimbledon of Chess” attracts the very best chess grandmasters in the world, along with thousands of amateur players, live event visitors and online visitors from around the world. In 2023, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament celebrates its 85th year. </p>

<p>With both the number one and number two in the world (Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren), five top 10 players and a total of eight top 20 players, the Masters group of the jubilee edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament has a very strong field of participants. The 85th edition promises to be an exciting battleground, as a number of great talents are also present to compete with the world class players. The tournament will take place from 13 to 29 January 2023 in Dorpshuis de Moriaan, Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands. </p>
<p><strong>Schedule and rate of play</strong></p>
<p>The Grandmasters will play against each other in 13 rounds in a round-robin tournament, round one starting Saturday the 14th of January. All rounds start at 14:00 hours CET, except for the final round on Sunday 29 January. This round starts at 12:00 hours CET.  </p>
<p>Rest days for the Masters group are scheduled on Wednesday 18 (Challengers will play round five this day), Monday 23 and Thursday 26 January. </p>
<p>On Thursday 19 January the fifth round of the Masters group will be played in another host city during Chess on Tour. More information about Chess on Tour will follow soon.  </p>
<p>The rate of play is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move.  </p>

<p> The FIDE Candidates Tournament is barely over, but the big events just keep on coming. The 5th stage of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, the FTX Road to Miami, starts at 18:00 CEST on Sunday July 10th, with Levon Aronian top seed. Here are his Day 1 pairings.</p>
<p>As you can see, he’s facing two established stars in Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Anish Giri, as well as Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun and 18-year-old Indian prodigy Arjun Erigaisi.</p>
<p>The field features three of the Candidates — Teimour Radjabov, Richard Rapport and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, while Radoslaw Wojtaszek is making his tour debut alongside young US stars Jeffery Xiong and Sam Sevian. In fact there are no less than six US players, including Leinier Dominguez, Sam Shankland and 19-year-old Hans Niemann.</p>

<p>The tournament is played as a double round-robin (all play all twice) with 14 rounds. The time control for each game is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 61. The players cannot draw a game by agreement before black’s 40th move. A claim for a draw before black’s 40th move is permitted only in cases of a draw by threefold repetition or a stalemate. If there is a tie for first place after 14 rounds, a playoff to determine the winner shall be played.</p>
