The GRENKE Chess Open will continue where it left off. The tournament format and the schedule (28 March to 1 April) are almost unchanged. A prize fund of 70,000 euros and the opportunity to play in the same tournament hall as the chess superstars will once again make the tournament the biggest open tournament in Europe from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday.

Chess.com and Hans Niemann have resolved their differences and are moving forward.

As many readers will be aware, Chess.com and Niemann, as well as Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, have been engaged in a lawsuit over the past year after Niemann defeated Carlsen in September at the Sinquefield Cup, and Carlsen withdrew from that event. Shortly after those events, Chess.com privately closed Niemann’s account and published an investigative report about Hans Niemann’s play.

Since June, both sides have negotiated privately in a good-faith effort to resolve their issues and allow the chess world to move forward without further litigation. We are happy to share that all sides have reached an agreement.

Chess.com, Magnus, Hans, and Hikaru all have their own opinions about the events surrounding the controversy, and they agree they should each be able to talk openly about their views.

In the meantime, Chess.com, Magnus, and Hans have released the following statements about their agreement:

“We are pleased to report that we have reached an agreement with Hans Niemann to put our differences behind us and move forward together without further litigation. At this time, Hans has been fully reinstated to Chess.com, and we look forward to his participation in our events. We would also like to reaffirm that we stand by the findings in our October 2022 public report regarding Hans, including that we found no determinative evidence that he has cheated in any in-person games. We all love chess and appreciate all of the passionate fans and community members who allow us to do what we do.” — Chess.com

As Hans returns to Chess.com, he will be allowed to play in any and all events, and will be treated no differently from any other player. Shortly after the Superbet Chess Classic will be the Superbet Warsaw Rapid & Blitz, returning with the 2023 Grand Chess Tour. Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland

The Pro Chess League is a $150,000 16-player team tournament taking place on Chess.com, featuring Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri and many more top players. The first five weeks are a Swiss tournament where teams that score 3 wins advance straight to the 8-team Playoffs, while teams with 3 losses are eliminated.

The Playoffs are held as a single elimination knockout, with quarterfinals, semifinals, a final and a 3rd place playoff. Each team has 6-10 players, but only 4 play each week, with an average rating cap of 2550 and at least one woman in each line-up. Each member of the team plays each member of the opposing team at 10+2 rapid chess. In case of a tie the players play another round of games at a faster time control.

Practical Information

If you are new to Lichess, it’s important to become familiar with the arena tournament format. Read our FAQ and consider trying out an arena tournament in advance. Arena points are awarded based on the number of games you win. If multiple players finish the tournament with the same number of points, tournament performance is used to break the tie. Prizes will be awarded within three days after the event, through PayPal.

Title Verification

To participate in the Titled Arena events, you need a verified titled account on Lichess. If you don’t already have a Lichess account, create one. Then, to get your FIDE or NM title verified, please fill out this title verification form, and we will process it within 24 hours. If you already have verified your title on Lichess, you don’t have to do this again. When your title has been verified by us, you will be able to join the tournaments.

Streaming

We’ve had a bunch of players streaming the previous Titled Arenas, including Magnus Carlsen, Alexander Grischuk, John Bartholomew, Eric Rosen and ChessNetwork. We encourage both participants and fans to live-stream the tournament. Magnus Carlsen, Norway Chess, and Iterate Launch Pawn — New Joint Venture to Develop Fantasy Chess App

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is one of the most prestigious events in the international chess calendar. The “Wimbledon of Chess” attracts the very best chess grandmasters in the world, along with thousands of amateur players, live event visitors and online visitors from around the world. In 2023, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament celebrates its 85th year.

With both the number one and number two in the world (Magnus Carlsen and Ding Liren), five top 10 players and a total of eight top 20 players, the Masters group of the jubilee edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament has a very strong field of participants. The 85th edition promises to be an exciting battleground, as a number of great talents are also present to compete with the world class players. The tournament will take place from 13 to 29 January 2023 in Dorpshuis de Moriaan, Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands.

Schedule and rate of play

The Grandmasters will play against each other in 13 rounds in a round-robin tournament, round one starting Saturday the 14th of January. All rounds start at 14:00 hours CET, except for the final round on Sunday 29 January. This round starts at 12:00 hours CET.

Rest days for the Masters group are scheduled on Wednesday 18 (Challengers will play round five this day), Monday 23 and Thursday 26 January.

On Thursday 19 January the fifth round of the Masters group will be played in another host city during Chess on Tour. More information about Chess on Tour will follow soon.

The rate of play is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from the first move.

Dear Chess World,

At the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, I made the unprecedented professional decision to withdraw from the tournament after my round three game against Hans Niemann. A week later during the Champions Chess Tour, I resigned against Hans Niemann after playing only one move.

I know that my actions have frustrated many in the chess community. I’m frustrated. I want to play chess. I want to continue to play chess at the highest level in the best events.

I believe that cheating in chess is a big deal and an existential threat to the game. I also believe that chess organizers and all those who care about the sanctity of the game we love should seriously consider increasing security measures and methods of cheat detection for over the board chess. When Niemann was invited last minute to the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, strongly considered withdrawing prior to the event. I ultimately chose to play.

I believe that Niemann has cheated more — and more recently — than he has publicly admitted. His over the board progress has been unusual, and throughout our game in the Sinquefield Cup I had the impression that he wasn’t tense or even fully concentrating on the game in critical positions, while outplaying me as black in a way I think only a handful of players can do. This game contributed to changing my perspective.

We must do something about cheating, and for my part going forward, I don’t want to play against people that have cheated repeatedly in the past, because don’t know what they are capable of doing in the future.

There is more that I would like to say. Unfortunately, at this time I am limited in what I can say without explicit permission from Niemann to speak openly. So far I have only been able to speak with my actions, and those actions have stated clearly that I am not willing to play chess with Niemann. I hope that the truth on this matter comes out, whatever it may be.

The Sinquefield Cup is a 10-player classical round-robin taking place in the Saint Louis Chess Club from 2-11 September 2022. It’s the fifth and final stage of the 2022 Grand Chess Tour, a series of five events with a total prize fund of $1.4 million.

The players receive 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one.
