FIDE World Cup 2025 to be hosted in India

   The FIDE World Cup is coming to India this year! Scheduled for October 30 to November 27, 2025, the tournament will feature the world’s best players battling for the coveted title and qualification spots in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament.

Format

The FIDE World Cup 2025 will feature 206 players competing in a knockout format—a dynamic and unpredictable system where the losing player in each round is eliminated.

The event has used several formats over the years, but since 2021, it has followed a single-elimination format. Each round spans three days: two classical games on the first two days, followed by tie-breaks on the third day, if necessary. In the first round, the top 50 players receive byes, while players seeded from 51 to 206 compete, with pairings based on the principle of the top half versus the reversed lower half.

What’s at stake?

The top three finishers of the 2025 World Cup will earn direct qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, which determines the challenger for the World Chess Championship.

Qualification Paths

Players can qualify for the World Cup through various avenues, including:

Reigning World Champion as of June 1, 2025
Top four finishers from the FIDE World Cup 2023
Reigning Women’s World Champion as of June 1, 2025
2024 World Junior Champion U-20
Qualifiers from Continental events, accounting for 80 spots
The highest-rated players in the June 2025 FIDE standard rating list, 13 players, who have not qualified by any of the above listed path
Top 100 national federations from the 2024 Chess Olympiad open section, each receiving one spot
4 nominees of the FIDE President
2 nominees of the Organiser
Detailed information on qualification can be found in the official FIDE handbook.

Hi, my name is Andrii Baryshpolets, a Ukrainian International Grandmaster, and I am running for President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). I fundraise for the electoral campaign, which precedes the upcoming elections in Chennai, India, on August 7, 2022.

I strive to make FIDE reputable, transparent, professional, and financially sustainable. Despite the ever-growing global popularity of chess, FIDE has been struggling to become a reputable organization as it is currently run by a Russian politician trying to get re-elected. The predecessor of the incumbent President was another Russian politician who had run FIDE for 23 years.

Reputability, professionalism, and love for chess are the core values that are the cornerstones of my service. My principles are the following:
• Zero tolerance for corruption in any form;
• FIDE shall serve chess, not private or political interests, and maintain the total independency of particular federations or governments of countries;
• FIDE shall strive for maximum transparency and openness in relationships with the global chess community;
• Commitment to global inclusion and promotion of chess by serving ALL member federations regardless of their level;
• Observe democratic, liberal, and corporate governance principles.

More information on my team and campaign can be found on our Facebook page — https://www.facebook.com/teambaryshpolets2022/ and the website is coming shortly. The raised money will be spent on travel expenses and promotional efforts during the electoral campaign. I commit to making the expenses publicly available.

Thank you!
Andrii Baryshpolets, PhD

The FIDE Council has approved today the bid presented by the All India Chess Federation (AICF) to host the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai, the capital of the Tamil Nadu state.

The exact schedule is still being discussed and will be announced in the coming days, but the event will take place between the end of July and the beginning of August, not very far off from the dates originally planned. The venue will be the convention centre at the Four Points by Sheraton, located in the Mahabalipuram area, one of the main touristic destinations in southern India.

Situated in the Bay of Bengal in eastern India, this city of 7 million inhabitants is also home to the legendary World Champion Viswanathan Anand, the first-ever Grandmaster from India. But the chess tradition of Chennai goes even further back, as the first Indian player to ever achieve the International Master title, Manuel Aaron, also grew up in the city. And, of course, Chennai previously hosted the 2013 World Championship, where Magnus Carlsen was first crowned World Champion, defeating Vishy Anand.

The AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan, who is also a Chairman of the FIDE Technical Commission (TEC), underlined the importance of the experience already gained by him and his team in recent years. «The experience with Delhi Chess Open, the largest event of its kind in the world, will be a big help, as we have already dealt with large numbers. But Olympiad is a big game. I am sure we will make it the best,» he said.

The 44th Olympiad, which was supposed to take place in Moscow and Khanty-Mansiysk, was shifted out of Russia following FIDE’s reaction to the war in Ukraine.
