World University Team Chess Championship to be held in Kazakhstan

Best university teams will meet in Almaty this August to compete for the title of FIDE World University Team Chess Champion.

The event is governed by FIDE and organised by the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, together with Almaty city administration and support from Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Sports and Tourism.

The competition has three stages. It begins with Online Swiss Qualifiers, followed by an Online Knockout stage. The over-the-board finals will then take place in Almaty from 3 to 10 August 2026.

There will be two online Swiss Qualifiers. The registration deadlines are 27 April 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC for teams participating in Online Swiss Qualifier 1, and 4 May 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC for teams participating in Online Swiss Qualifier 2.

FIDE World University Team Chess Championship 2026

The finals will feature 16 teams – eight that have qualified from the knockout, and eight wild cards, invited by FIDE and the organiser.

The tournament features an inclusive team concept – each match will be played on four boards and lineups must include at least one female and at least one male player.

Participation is open to university teams, with players born between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2008 and currently enrolled in at least one class at the university.

The winning team will become the FIDE World University Team Champion and receive a prize of €25,000. The team finishing second will be awarded €15,000, while third-place will receive €10,000.

Asian Junior/ Girls Chess Championship 2026

16th to 26th August 2026, India

The All India Chess Federation (AICF), under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and FIDE, will organize the Asian Junior Chess Championships 2026 in Mumbai, India, from 16 to 26 August 2026.

The championship is open to players representing federations affiliated with the Asian Chess Federation.

Eligible participants must be born on or after 1 January 2006 (Under-20 category). Separate Open and Girls events will be conducted, with each federation entitled to register one official player in each section, in addition to any number of extra players.

The event will feature competitions in Standard, Rapid, and Blitz chess. The Standard Championship will be played over 9 Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The Rapid Championship will consist of 7 rounds with a time control of 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment, while the Blitz Championship will be played with a time control of 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment.

The tournament will commence with arrivals on 16 August, followed by the Technical Meeting, Opening Ceremony, Blitz Championship, and the first round of the Rapid Championship on 17 August. The Standard Championship will begin on 20 August and conclude on 25 August, followed by the Closing Ceremony. Departures are scheduled for 26 August.

The championship offers valuable title opportunities in accordance with FIDE regulations. Subject to the required number of participants and federations, direct titles and title norms may be awarded. Gold medalists in the Standard Championship may earn the International Master (IM) or Woman International Master (WIM) title, together with a Grandmaster (GM) or Woman Grandmaster (WGM) norm, respectively.

Official players (one per federation per section) will receive complimentary accommodation in shared rooms provided by the organizers. Additional participants and accompanying persons may stay at the official hotels at special championship rates.

A registration fee of USD 110 applies to all participants, officials, and accompanying persons. Entry fees are USD 75 for official players and USD 150 for additional players, covering participation in Standard, Rapid, and Blitz events.

Atyrau Open 2026 International Chess Tournament

(Stage 3 of the Kazakhstan Chess Cup 2026)

The overall management and organization of the Tournament shall be carried out by the Kazakhstan
Chess Federation (KCF) with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of
Kazakhstan as well as the Department of Physical Education and Sport of Atyrau region

Dates: October 11 (arrival day) – October 21 (departure day), 2026;

Playing venue: to be published on the KCF website.

Masters Tournament

Main Prizes KZT 37 750 000 ≈ USD 75 500

The Stage consists of two tournaments (hereinafter the Tournaments):

• Masters tournament;
• Open tournament.

The Tournaments shall be FIDE rated.
The Tournaments shall be held as 9-round Swiss system events in accordance with FIDE Laws of
Chess.
Pairings shall be made using the Swiss Manager software.
Time control: classical 90+30 (90 minutes for the entire game with an increment of 30 seconds per
move starting from move one).
Any player arriving at the chessboard more than 30 minutes after the start of the session shall lose
the game by default.
Draw offers are prohibited before move 30.

Fair play (anti-cheating) measures shall be implemented in accordance with the FIDE Anti-Cheating
Regulations under the standard protection level. A 15-minute broadcast delay shall be applied.
All players must adhere to the dress code (Business Casual, Smart Casual; shorts and slippers are not
allowed).
Smoking in the playing hall is prohibited.
A player who has finished their game is considered a spectator and must leave the tournament hall.

The Open and the Women’s Olympiad

The Chess Olympiads will take place in the ancient Silk Road city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 15 till 27 September 2026.

The Olympiad will consist of two sections, Open and Women. Both events will be played over 11 rounds, using the Swiss system, with teams of four players plus one reserve.

Three trophies

There will be three trophies:

The Hamilton-Russell Cup for the winners of the Open section
The Vera Menchik Cup for the winners of the Women section
The Nona Gaprindashvili Trophy for the best combined federation performance across the Open and Women sections

Schedule

The Opening Ceremony will take place on 15 September, while the first round will be played on 16 September. After round six, there will be a day off on 22 September. Round 11 and Closing Ceremony will take place on 27 September.

4 и 5 августа вместе с финальным этапом командного чемпионата мира 2026 года по шахматам среди университетов пройдёт матч юношеских (от 8 до 18 лет) сборных Казахстана и мира – между командами юношей (Kazakhstan Boys Team vs. World Boys Team) и командами девушек (Kazakhstan Girls Team vs. World Girls Team), сначала в формате рапида, затем в формате блица.
